How I Got Started
Making hats has been an evolutionary process for me. I learnt to make clothes from an early age by watching my mother sew. Over the years I moved on from making dolls clothes, children’s dress up costumes, to creating outfits for Balls and weddings.
One day while I was making a wedding outfit for a friend she asked me if I could make a hat to match. Never one to back off from a challenge I said “Of Course” and so created my very first hat sewn from fabric, ribbons and beads.
After that I attended my first millinery course in NZ and started creating hats and head pieces for balls, weddings, cocktail parties and the races. I love attending courses to up date my knowledge and skills as well as to meet other milliners, over the years have been lucky enough to attend workshops in Uk Australia and NZ.
My Inspiration
My Inspiration comes from observing; shapes, textures, forms, colours, and personality that I see in the client and her outfit. I am always intrigued by the way these elements come together in the art form of a hat.
My Materials
I love to work with modern day luxury materials - Silk, Organza, velvets, sculptural feathers,
Ribbons, beads, flowers, antique trimmings, as well as traditional millinery materials – Sinamay,
sisal, straw, fur felt, hat veiling and crin.
I hand make all my own flowers and dye feathers to produce perfect colour matches.
